- Replacing all rotten woods for new pressure treated wood and keeping the good ones
- If the wooden gate post is unstable, probably the post has rotted out and is no longer supporting the wooden gate and has to be replaced for a new one.
- If the wooden gate post is unstable, but not rotted and can be fixed, I will fix it.
- If the frame of the wooden gate still in good condition, is not rotted and the hardware can be attached without causing sag, I can keep it, otherwise, will be disassembled and replaced for a new one, if pressure treated wood is applicable it will be used.
- All the wooden gate boards in bad shape or rotted will be replaced for a new one, if pressure treated wood is applicable, it will be used.
- When the wooden gate doesn’t latch, probably is because the hardware (hinge) is getting loose due to the rotten wood that is not supporting the screws anymore. Or the wooden gate post is unstable and need to be fixed or replaced.
- The hardware (hinge) is so badly rusted that is not supporting the wooden gate anymore, causing sag and not closing the door properly anymore and have to be replaced for a new set.
The other way is to replace the entire wooden gate creating a new one or replicating it.
In the process of rebuilding or repairing the wooden gate I use to use all supplies that are made for exterior use, for example:
. exterior, outdoor wood screws;
. exterior, outdoor, waterproof wood glue;
. exterior, outdoor sealant;
Before start painting, when pressure treated wood is used or not, the wood requires time to dry to be paintable. Otherwise, the paint will not bond well.
