Aging in place is to allow the senior citizens’ to be able to live independently in their homes for as long as possible.
However, the home will require corrections and adaptations recommended by the home inspector to improve safety, maneuverability and accessibility for elderly residents.
As a handyman, I would love to help you get the list of corrections, adaptations, and recommendations for your home done to be elderly safety.
Here are some of the typical improvements for elderly safety, nice to have:
- Replace standard door hinges for clear swing hinges
- Replace the smoke and CO detector for new ones
- Replace the floor or carpet for slip-resistant walking surfaces and color and texture contrasts to indicate a change in surface level outside and inside. Carpet can be tripping hazards.
- Replace all doors, cabinets, drawers knobs for lever-type hardware. Lever-type hardware is easier to use than round knobs or handles, especially for people with arthritis.
- Replace the old lightbulbs for LED lightbulbs to brighten the interior rooms and outdoor. LEDs use less energy and last longer than conventional or fluorescent bulbs.
- Clean up the closets and areas that the senior no longer uses, de-clutter spaces adding shelving, eliminating big pieces of furniture may be, adding bookcases or racks to store newspapers and magazines to organize overstuffed rooms.
Stairs
- Install slip-resistant to provide slip-resistant adhesive strips in a contrasting color at the edge of each stair tread.
Bathroom and Shower
- Install handheld and adjustable showerheads. Allows the shower to be used while standing or sitting.
- Install grab bars on walls near the shower or tub. Grab bars must be installed by a professional and securely anchored to wall studs or masonry. Do not rely on towel bars or suction-cup grab bars, as these cannot support enough weight.
- Convert to lever handle faucets
- Replace the toilet paper holder for one design that allows rolls to be changed with one hand
Kitchen
- Convert to lever handle faucets
Driveway/sidewalks
- Repair cracks and broken steps.
